The League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) strongly condemns the killing of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo. This despicable act, committed by the perpetrators disguised as uniformed personnel, happened in broad daylight and while the Governor was acting in the service of his community. Not only that, five other lives were taken. We hope that these malefactors are swiftly brought to justice as a stark warning to all others who intend to commit similar deplorable acts.
These increasing acts of violence against those in public service (or against Chief Executives) have further strengthened our resolve to call for a united and collaborative effort from all levels of government to address the root cause of this criminality, and to build inclusive communities that share the same vision of a peaceful and safe society.
In the face of these threats against our safety, and that of our constituents, we members of the LCP remain resolute in our commitment to promote a safer, and more secure environment for all local leaders. Our duty and responsibility as public servants will not be deterred.
On behalf of the LCP, our deepest condolences to the families of those whose lives were so unjustly cut short, and to the people of Negros Oriental. Governor Degamo was taken too soon, but he leaves us with a legacy that will continue to be an inspiration for those who answer the call for public service.
