Supporting the women's collective of Tangub City

March 6, 2021 - Tangub City

Known as the Christmas Symbol Capital of the Philippines, Tangub is a thriving city located in Misamis Occidental and is now becoming known for its notable programs on education and women's welfare. Led by City Mayor Jennifer Tan, Tangub City has demonstrated how recognizing women's involvement in community activities is vital in maintaining their active participation in the local government's programs.

The city's GAD fund supports numerous initiatives that benefit women community members from all its 55 barangays. Among these include women welfare programs, youth involvement programs, provision of vitamins for children and pregnant women, and education campaign on women's rights conducted at the barangay level as part of the city's GAD-related IEC. Another continuing project supported by the GAD fund is the construction of Bahay Pag-asa, a women crisis center which will not only cater to the city's constituents but will also be made accessible to clients from neighboring municipalities within Misamis Occidental. Moreover, the city government allots 1\% of the GAD fund to support its local council for the protection of children (LCPC).

One of the most notable initiatives of the city is the provision of financial incentives to all the members of women's associations in all barangays during the annual National Women's Month Celebration held every March. Women are rewarded of their active participation in monthly peer group meetings and activities organized by the city government. Currently, the number of registered members of women associations is around 5,400.

The city government also came up with ways on how to support the women's livelihoods. One example is when they were brought to Cebu for a benchmarking activity in other local women's associations. There, they learned how to make pasalubong such as piñato and malunggay polvoron. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the associations were provided by the city government with sewing machines to make cloth face masks.

Despite the pandemic, the city government continued to distribute incentives to the women associations. It only shows how the city continues to prioritize the welfare of women and appreciate the vital role of women associations in the barangays. The city government also requested for their support in containing the spread of the virus in the communities by reporting quarantine violations to the authorities.

The experience of Tangub City only demonstrates the importance of the participation of community women members in advancing women empowerment particularly in the areas of leadership and entrepreneurship. Their contributions to the community and in supporting their fellow women are evident in their collective actions with support from the city government.
