Statement of LCP on the current outbreak of the novel coronavirus

By LCP Secretariat
February 7, 2020 - Quezon City

The League commends city governments in the country that have put measures in place to prevent and control the spread of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Recognizing that public health is a local function and that outbreaks such as the 2019-nCoV are influenced by geographical realities, we are one with our local chief executives who have remained vigilant and are ready to protect the health and wellbeing of their constituents.

We likewise advise the public to observe safety precautions and sanitary practices to avoid the spread of infections.

Such measures include frequent handwashing; refraining from touching the eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands; covering coughs and sneezes; and seeking immediate medical care for symptoms such as fever, cough, and difficulty in breathing.

The League also warns against rampant misinformation and sensationalism which has created unnecessary panic and has hampered efforts to prevent and control the outbreak.

Thus, we strongly urge the public to be discerning when it comes to online news articles and text messages surrounding the 2019-nCoV.

For accurate and reliable information, everyone is encouraged to refer to the dedicated resource pages of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Department of Health (DOH).

The League encouraged the public to refer to the online resource pages of the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Department of Health for accurate and reliable information.
