Statement of the League of Cities of the Philippines on Additional Funding Support for Cities

By LCP Secretariat
February 13, 2025 - Quezon City

The League appreciates the result of the consultation between the legislative and executive branches of government in passing the 2025 National Budget. As the constitutional mandate to prepare the budget emanates from the House of Representatives, we commend House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez's leadership in proactively advancing city development by increasing financial support to cities, a pivotal step toward fostering sustainable growth.

"Malaking tulong po ito sa aming siyudad at diretsong tutugon sa pangangailangan ng mga taga-Gentri," according to Mayor Jonjon Ferrer, who is also the LCP Treasurer. "Most cities rely on national government support to deliver quality services to their constituents. We are confident that this will significantly improve the lives of every Filipino," he added.

This fresh funding will empower cities to boost programs and services geared towards cushioning the impacts of inflation, a high unemployment rate, underemployment, and other social and economic challenges. Increasing cities' resources will ultimately result in better services.

Maasin City Mayor Nacional Mercado also expresses his gratitude for the additional funding, "We thank and commend House Speaker Romualdez for his commitment to furthering our programs and services in cities, especially for those who need it the most. The additional funding will go a long way for Maasin City residents."

The League thanks House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez for creating meaningful change in and for cities.
